Fernando Suels Mendoza and Daphnis Kokkinos (lying down) in “Nefés”

The wooden floor of the stage has a ditch in it, which fills imperceptibly with water until there’s a small lake that can be used for all kinds of games. The wet elements underscore the sensuality that is at the foreground of Nefés, which in Turkish means something like ‘breath’. Turkish music, sometimes slow Sufi-sounds, sometimes Turkish pop, runs through the entire piece. Individual dancers free themselves from the crowd and dance solos – sometimes withdrawn, such as Rainer Behr under the shower, or sometimes eccentrically, like the solo with breakdance positions. A female Indian dancer performs a classical kuchipudi to jazz music. The women’s movements are often interrupted by the men, such as when a man disturbs a woman in the middle of her solo, grabs her by the arm and leg and spins her around before setting her back down. Another man twirls a table in a circle, and then a woman. When he sets her down, she staggers and then begins to dance again, until the men come back and pass her hurriedly over their heads.
